Description
The ways in which social work is portrayed in popular culture contribute to the shaping of the public s images of social workers, of social problems with which social workers are involved, and of clients as the consumers of social work services. Josephine Nieves, former Executive Director of NASW, identified improving the public image of social workers as one of her top priorities for the association. "Little troubles professional social workers more," she stated, "than the less-than-accurate image the public seems to have of our profession, acquired unfairly and based on misinformation" (Nieves, 1997, p. 2). Inaccurate public perception of what social workers actually do has been identified as a key factor in low social work salaries ("Study Links Low Pay," 1998). ABC Television's "Norm Show," the most recent example of social work as constructed by a medium of popular culture, depicts a criminal convicted of fraud who is sentenced to become a social worker and to perform court-mandated community service. Among other gross unethical conduct, Norm sleeps with a client, "drinks on the job, disregards all established ethics and flouts the law" ("Members Say 'Norm Show' Mocks," 1999, p. 8).
